Musical Director Position

Due to the upcoming retirement of its long-standing director, the Ukrainian Male Chorus of Edmonton (UMCE) is seeking an individual to assume the responsibilities of Musical Director. 

Reporting to the UMCE Executive and working with the Artistic Committee, the Musical Director is responsible for leading choir rehearsals and performances, auditioning new choir members and artistic direction.

Selected applicants will be interviewed; shortlisted candidates will be required to audition at a rehearsal with a panel of adjudicators as part of the selection process. Subject to a six month probationary period, a two-year renewable contract will be offered to the successful candidate, including a suitable honorarium, commensurate with skills, ability and experience.

Job Description

 General Qualifications

  • Formal musical training, experience and training in choral conducting
  • Experience and ability with group and solo vocal coaching
  • Strong leadership qualities, organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to arrange folk songs or adapt SATB repertoire for male chorus
  • A working knowledge of Ukrainian is required and fluency would be an asset
  • Knowledge of male choral repertoire including Ukrainian sacred music, familiarity with the liturgical services in the Ukrainian Orthodox and Catholic churches and traditional and folk music is highly recommended


  • Works collaboratively with the artistic committee and the executive to plan all chorus activities, selection of repertoire for performances and concerts
  • Effective planning and efficient use of rehearsal time to prepare repertoire
  • Competent vocalist – able to demonstrate desired outcome to full chorus, in sectional rehearsals and occasionally provide one-on-one coaching
  • Rehearses and performs with chorus accompanist
  • Ability to travel and tour locally, nationally, and internationally with chorus
  • Willingness to support fundraising and promotional activities of the chorus
  • When appropriate and possible, represent UMCE at various functions/events (e.g. receptions, media interviews, lectures, speaking engagements)
